Trousers that aren't jeans

It all started in the summer of 2016 when I slowly became obsessed with culottes. They're just so slinky and satisfying and widely available in a number of high street retailers. And just like that, for the first time in years, I found loose fabric flapping around my shins. I felt liberated! Free as a viscose-based bird. It was a glorious summer. But then, as quickly as it began, it was over.

The skies darkened and so did my prospects in the trouser department. I was back to skinny jeans. And it didn't feel good. My legs were crying out for air. I prayed to the fashion gods all winter long that it would still be acceptable to wear culottes come SS17. And by jove, it was. In fact that's an understatement. It was acceptable to wear only culottes. And wear them we did.

But as time tends to do, it passes. And once again those steamy days of exposed ankles and expansive hemlines are over. But this time, there's a glimmer of hope. We're revolting. We will not give up our new trouser friends just because Christmas is in sight. We will not return exclusively to the realm of the skinny jean. And just this once, the fashion gods were listening.

I for one, have gone WILD. My first purchase was a pair of tapered cigarette pants in a soft woolen fabric from Zara. Very androgynous. I like them worn with a roll neck. So enamoured am I, that I have taken them to a tailor to be pinched in at the waist. You don't do that with your Topshop Jonies, do you?

My second is a pair of culottes teetering just above the ankle that shall work wonders with my dream winter boots (these Topshop Manuel patent beauties in case you were wondering) and a cropped jumper or two.

My third purchase I can only describe as leisure wear. Basically, wide trousers in gloriously stretchy, soft fabric that make me feel like a sixty five year-old woman on her way to the gym. There are no photos of this pair yet as I haven't 100% worked out how to style them yet, but my mark my words, I will. I love them all like children.

And so, just like that, my skinny jeans have become somewhat of an afterthought. At last, fashion is on our side. And flapping joyfully around our ankles.

  1. I'm revamping my wardrobe and want to lessen my load of jeans! Jeans are too cold for winter anyways. >.<

    1. Totally agree Rose! Although I've lapsed a bit the last few weeks (just laziness!) so need to get back into the realm of the trouser. Just so much more flattering too. Love your blog by the way, just had a little nose.x
